A frenectomy is the
removal problem-causing muscle tissue from the mouth. The most common type
of frenectomy, a lingual frenectomy, is the removal of tissue from under the
tongue. This procedure is performed on pateints who are "tongue tied".
In tongue tied patients, the muscle tissue under the tongue prevents full use of
the tongue and may affect speech. After consultation with the doctor, if it is
determined that a frenectomy is needed, Dr. Follmar will remove the tissue that
limits your ability to use your tongue. After the surgery you may experience a
difference in speech as well as muscle control. These symptoms will resolve
themselves in time. Several other types of frenectomies are also commonly
performed in our office.
