Orthognathic surgery is performed to correct dentofacial
(bones of the jaw and face) deformities. The goal of orthognathic surgery is to
correct mastication (chewing) problems and enhance appearance. It may prevent
future jaw joint problems and early periodontal disease caused by improper
alignment. Orthognathic surgery is generally coordinated with an orthodontist.
The Oral Surgeon correct the jaw deformities, while the orthodontist ensures
that the teeth are aligned properly before, during, and after the surgery.
