Wisdom teeth are generally removed due to overcrowding and
infection, or to prevent these symptoms before they occur. Dr. Follmar
will determine whether you wisdom teeth need to be extracted after carefully
examining your x-rays.
When wisdom teeth are overcrowded, they become impacted.
There are several different types of impactions. Soft tissue
impactions occurs when the crown of the tooth is covered by tissue. In a partial
bony impaction, the crown of the tooth is partially
covered by bone. Full bony
impactions occur when the crown of the tooth is completely covered by bone.
At
the time of consultation you will see a video regarding the extraction of your
wisdom teeth. This video will explain the necessity as well as the risk and
complications of extracting your wisdom teeth. It is a good idea to have all
four wisdom teeth extracted at the same time. Most patients prefer to have
all four removed at once to minimize both time and cost.
